Chapter 12 Arriving at the He Family

After Sun Chunlan and other servants of the He family left, they looked around the courtyard curiously. It was made of blue bricks and tiles and paved with stone slabs.

Sun Bomin's eyes were full of surprise, and he said with admiration: "Sister, the road they walk on is paved with stone slabs, and they cover themselves with large quilts."

Sun Bomin stroked the soft quilt that was 8% new, and it was so comfortable. People in Sunjia Village could only use straw quilts.

Sun Chunlan said to her brother, "You will stay in the same room with me tonight. Put a quilt you brought from home on the floor and cover it with the He family's quilt."

Although men and women should not touch each other, they should not live separately when they are out and about in a strange place. If they encounter danger, they can escape faster if they run together.

Sun Bomin nodded and said seriously, "I understand, sister. I'll move the oranges in."

When I first entered the yard, the oranges were still on the patio, so I had to move them into the house to feel at ease.

Sun Chunlan went to the next room to get a quilt and laid out two more reed quilts that she had brought from home.

I took my brother to the patio where we came in.

This courtyard is really big, with at least three courtyards. Sun Chunlan and Sun Bomin's room is in the second courtyard. As soon as they go out of the door, there is a row of rooms opposite. Occasionally, people pass by and look at them curiously.

The brother and sister didn't dare to say much. They walked along the corridor and came to the patio at the entrance. The cart was too big to pull in. Sun Bomin picked up the shoulder pole and carried the oranges into the house.

After all the oranges were put away, they unloaded the cart and carried them into the house.

The cart is worth a lot of money. When my father was alive, he had someone make it for him, and it cost a hundred dollars.

Everything was ready, and it was getting dark. The two siblings' stomachs were rumbling, so they took their water bags and went to the kitchen to get some hot water to eat with the dried sweet potatoes they brought from home.

As soon as he walked out of the gate, he saw another familiar face. It was Lai Fu, the servant who followed He Erlang.

Seeing that the siblings were still there, he quickly shouted, "Sun's siblings, hurry up and have dinner. It will be late or there will be no food."

He is so slow and not quick at all. If you miss dinner, you will go hungry.

Sun Bomin said honestly, "Brother Lai Fu, no need. We brought food and want to get some hot water to drink." Lai Fu is about the same age as Sun Bomin, but it is not known who is older. It is okay to call him brother.

It's embarrassing to live in a place given by others but still eat their food. You should know when to advance and when to retreat.

Lai Fu lives in the He family compound. He just got a large piece of meat left over by the young master and brought it over for his parents to eat.

Arranging two people to live opposite their family can be considered special care.

Seeing what Sun Bomin was holding in his hand, he asked curiously, "What are you eating?" It was covered tightly, could it be something good?

Sun Bomin opened the lotus leaf, revealing the dried sweet potatoes, and said with a simple smile: "Dried sweet potatoes, dried at home, Brother Laifu, do you want some?"

Lai Fu thought it was a good thing. Everyone can dry sweet potatoes, and they are usually eaten as snacks, not as a main meal.

He waved his hand and said, "No, keep it for yourself."

He then said to Sun Chunlan: "Big sister, big brother, come with me quickly and have some food. Dried sweet potatoes are not good for eating."

Without further ado, he dragged Sun Bomin away and said proudly, "Don't worry about eating. The He family is a wealthy family, so it doesn't matter if there are two of you."

I walked around the corridor and came to the kitchen, only to find it empty. Everyone had already prepared their meal and gone back to eat.

Lai Fu said to the cook, "These two are the second young master's men. Please bring them a bowl of rice quickly, as they are hungry." The cook saw Lai Fu and knew that he was the second young master's personal servant. She smiled and said, "Wait a moment."

Sun Chunlan and Sun Boming were brought here by Lai Fu in a daze. When they walked to the kitchen, they were shocked to find that the He family's kitchen was bigger than their own living room and was filled with all kinds of kitchen utensils.

The He family is really rich. They can employ servants, and even the servants can afford to live in a blue brick and tile house.

When the cook brought two large bowls of rice with several pieces of braised pork with preserved vegetables on top, I was even more shocked. Even the servants could afford to eat rice and meat.

The food is much better than that in Sunjia Village.

Sun Chunlan and her brother took the food, said thank you, asked for some hot water, and left with Lai Fu.

Lai Fu ordered, "When you finish eating, put the bowls back in the kitchen."

He pointed to a small house not far away and said, "That's the toilet. Please feel free to use it."

Feeling that everything had been explained clearly, he was preparing to return to the compound to serve the young master.

Sun Chunlan quickly said, "Brother Lai Fu, wait a moment."

He hurried into the room, took a basket, filled it with about 20 kilograms of tangerines, came out, and said with a smile: "Thank you, Brother Laifu. Please help us deliver these tangerines to Mr. He. Thanks to meeting him today, my sister and I don't have to live on the streets."

Lai Fu glanced at the 20-cent oranges. They looked ordinary and he couldn't tell how they were worth 20 cents. He waved his hand and said, "No need. You guys should sell them."

I can’t afford it. If I take it, will the siblings ask the young master to pay for it?

Sun Chunlan quickly said: "Brother Laifu, these tangerines have a unique flavor, they are fragrant and sweet, I want to eat more, they are delicious."

"Yes, they are delicious. Everyone in our village likes the oranges from my family." Sun Bomin thought Lai Fu disliked the oranges from his family.

He quickly peeled one and handed it to him: "Brother Lai Fu, try it, it's delicious. Master He will definitely like it."

Lai Fu couldn't resist the enthusiasm of the two siblings. They would not let him go until he had a bite of the tangerine. He took the tangerine, peeled a piece and put it in his mouth.

After taking a bite, he continued to eat. After three or five times two, he finished the orange that was the size of a baby's fist. He said in surprise, "Oh, Brother Sun, your oranges are really delicious. No wonder you sell them for 20 cents."

I thought the two siblings were asking for too much, but after eating it, I realized it was really worth it. It's refreshing, sweet and smooth, and it's so delicious that I can't describe it.

Lai Fu took the basket happily and said with a smile: "Then I thank you on behalf of the young master. I will go back. The young master needs me to serve him."

I quickly left the yard and peeled a few more oranges on the way. Oh, they were so delicious that I couldn’t help it.

Sun Chunlan and her brother watched Lai Fu leave before they walked into the room and closed the door.

"Sister, come and see, it's such a big bowl of rice, and it's compacted. Look at the braised pork, it's so fatty and fragrant." Sun Boming couldn't wait to pick up the chopsticks and secretly tasted it. It was really delicious.

Since my father passed away and my younger brother died of illness, my family only dared to buy one pound of pork for the New Year. But this pound of pork was not for our own consumption, but for guests to eat.

As for the chickens we raised at home, we used them to lay eggs and sold them at the market. Chickens that couldn't lay eggs were also sold at the market. We didn't dare to eat meat at home. We had to use the money we earned to buy rice bran and sweet potatoes for food.

Sun Chunlan's face was red, whether it was because of the heat or her emotions, she looked at the big bowl of rice and said regretfully: "It's a pity that it will go bad if I don't eat it, otherwise I can pack it up and take it home to eat."

Sun Bomin felt very ashamed. He just wanted to eat by himself and didn't even think about going home. He scratched his head and said nothing.

Sun Chunlan picked up the bowl and said kindly: "Eat quickly, as if it were our New Year's meal."

Sun Bomin's eyes lit up, and he smiled as he picked up the big bowl and ate it in big mouthfuls, sighing, "Sister, the rice is delicious, and the pork with preserved vegetables is delicious too. The cook is really nice, filling the bowl with rice. Brother Lai Fu is also nice, and the young master of the He family is also nice."

As Sun Bomin spoke, he praised the person he had just met.

Sun Chunlan giggled, transferred the rice and meat in her bowl to her brother's bowl, and said with a smile: "The bowl is too big, I can't finish it."

It would be a lie to say that we couldn't finish it. The half-grown boy was eating the poor. My younger brother was at that age and usually got hungry quickly. I shared some with him so that he could eat more.
