Chapter 31 Returning to Mother’s Home
On the twenty-eighth day of the lunar year, the Sun family cleaned the house from top to bottom and cleared the garbage. On the twenty-ninth day of the lunar year, Su got up early, prepared a pot of breakfast, and got up the five siblings of Sun Shan, who were going back to her mother's house today.
Sun Boming put the New Year gifts on the cart. Su's parents' home was in Hulingshan Village in the next town. The name sounded like a village deep in the mountains with even more isolated transportation.
It takes an hour and a half to get to Sunjia Village by walking over mountains and hills. Ox carts cannot go there, so one can only push a wheelbarrow.
Under Su's urging, Sun Shan quickly finished his breakfast. Today he had scallop and pork porridge, which was sweet and delicious. He ate two big bowls.
After everything was ready, Huang instructed, "Go early and come back early. The mountain road is dangerous. Don't come back too late."
Sun Bomin responded, put Sun Shan on the cart, and pushed it out of the yard.
Following behind was Su, who was also pushing the cart. The eldest sister Guyu helped, and the second, third and fourth sisters followed behind.
As it was too early and there were few people in the village, we quickly walked out of the village entrance and headed towards Hulingshan Village.
Sun Shan sat on the cart filled with New Year gifts and looked at the scenery around him curiously.
Sun Bomin asked with concern: "Shanzi, are you cold?"
Sun Shan shook his head. He was wearing a thick cotton jacket, thick cotton trousers, thick cotton socks, thick cotton shoes, and a hat, but he didn't feel cold at all.
Su was pushing the cart at the back. She had a bag of rice on her cart, as well as gifts for the festival: sugar, wine, cakes, pork, a big rooster, a duck, etc. It was quite heavy and hard to push, but fortunately her four daughters helped to lighten the burden a little.
As for Sun Boming's car, it contained a bag of sweet potatoes, the old cotton-padded jacket brought back by Aunt Sun, and the old cotton-padded jackets of several sisters of the Sun family, packed together in large and small packages.
It took about an hour to walk and climb a mountain.
The Sun family stopped to rest for a while, ate a rice cake, drank some water, and continued on their way.
Sun Shan looked at the mountains one after another, and felt at a loss that this place was really remote and mountainous, and the road was more difficult to walk than that of Sunjia Village.
As for why Sun Boming married Su, there is actually a well-known story.
According to the villagers, once at the market, Sun Boming went to buy daily necessities, and Su went out of the mountain to sell eggs to supplement the family income.
For unknown reasons, Su had an argument with the thugs. The thugs crushed the eggs that Su had worked so hard to save and even beat him.
Sun Bomin had a strong sense of justice when he was young, and he would help others when he saw injustice.
Later, during the scuffle, Su and Sun Boming somehow ended up hugging each other.
And was seen by people from Su’s village.
Later, Su's parents came to the door and asked Sun Boming to take responsibility. If he didn't marry Su, their Su family would be drowned in spit.
Later, Sun Boming married Su, a thin and weak woman from a poor family.
To outsiders, it was obvious that Su married into a wealthy family.
However, after Su came into the family, she behaved herself and worked hard without complaint. Except that it took so long for her to give birth to a son, she was generally satisfactory in other aspects.
After climbing another mountain, Sun Shan finally saw houses. This place was like a basin, concave in shape. Walking down the mountain, he arrived at Hulingshan Village.
Sun Shan's butt hurt from sitting so much that he got up and walked.
Su said nervously: "Shanzi, don't play around, walk carefully, and be careful not to roll down the mountain."
He also assigned his second daughter Lixia to take care of Sun Shan. Anyone could have an accident except Sun Shan.
It was bumpy all the way, but the road down the mountain was quite easy to walk on. Looking down from the foot of the mountain, there were thatched houses and yellow mud houses interspersed with each other. It was obvious that this was a poor little mountain village that needed to be the focus of poverty alleviation.
They walked down the mountain quickly and came to the entrance of the village. Su called out, "Boss, wait for me here. Don't go into the village first. I'm going to bring something for my second sister."
Sun Bomin nodded and said, "Go quickly and come back soon, in case someone sees us here."
Su carried a sack of sweet potatoes from the cart, and the four Guyu sisters took some clothes, candy, rice cakes and bacon.
Sun Shan picked up a piece of meat and followed Su.
After turning left and right and passing through a small bamboo forest, you will see two thatched houses surrounded by a small courtyard.
Su didn't call anyone, she just opened the door to the yard, walked to the thatched cottage and called out, "Second sister, are you there?"
The person inside responded and opened the door. What came into view was an old woman with half-white hair, a wrinkled face, and dark skin.
She is much older than Su, and you can tell at first glance that she is a woman with a miserable life.
Following behind him were three girls, ranging in age from 3 to 12 years old.
The old woman called out, "Big sister."
Seeing Guyu and Sun Shan, he said happily: "Guyu, Shanzi, you are here too."
Su didn't answer and walked into the house alone.
Sun Shan followed him in. The inside was even more shabby than the outside, with two beds, a table, and a few small stools.
It is simple and shabby, but it is clean.
The three little girls called out "Auntie", "Cousin" and "Cousin".
Sun Shan couldn't tell the names of his three cousins apart, so he just called everyone "cousin" and called whoever responded.
Su put down her things and asked Guyu to take the three nephews out. Sun Shan, relying on his young age, said he was very tired and sat on a stool, looking around bored.
Su whispered, "This bag is of sweet potatoes. Save them and you'll get through the winter. These winter clothes belong to Guyu's sisters. They're still new and warm. Give them to the maids. Here's a bag of candy, a bag of rice cakes, and some bacon. They were brought back by Shanzi's aunt. I'll share some with you."
Aunt Su's eyes were red, and she said in a choked voice, "Sister, bring the things over here. Does my brother-in-law and mother-in-law know about this?"
Su held the eldest sister's hand and comforted her: "Don't worry, mother-in-law and the head of the family know it, and you know them well, so they are the best to talk to."
Second Aunt Su nodded. Her brother-in-law and mother-in-law were the kindest people she had ever met. Her eldest sister was blessed.
Su glanced outside and saw no one was looking. She took out a purse from her trouser pocket and handed it to Second Aunt Su, whispering, "Here are 300 coins. Take it. If you run into trouble, you'll need the money in an emergency."
Second Aunt Su tried to refuse, but Su forced it in, saying sternly, "Take it if it's given to you, but be sure to hide it well, and don't let anyone steal it."
Aunt Su said anxiously, "Sister, you must not take this money. It will be hard for us if our in-laws find out."
Su waved her hand and said, "Shanzi's aunt gave 2 taels to each family, and your brother-in-law gave me 1 tael to spend. Don't worry, this money is mine, you take it."
Second Aunt Su lowered her head, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably, unable to speak.
Su also sighed. There was nothing she could do. Her second sister had a bad fate.
I quickly asked, "My younger brother and sister-in-law didn't say anything to you, right?"
Second Aunt Su shook her head and said, "With my father and mother here, she wouldn't dare to do anything to me."
It was just some bad words, and Aunt Su was used to it.
Su comforted him, "Don't pay attention to her. It's not her turn to make decisions at home. Don't think about anything now. Raise the three girls well. If you meet someone who doesn't despise you, you can marry again."
Aunt Su shook her head and said, "Sister, don't get married. Stay in Hulingshan Village and raise your three daughters."
Su did not force it. If you marry a good person, you are lucky. If you marry a bad person, it is better not to marry.
How many men are as responsible and honest as Shanzi's father?
In Su's life, he felt that going to the market to sell eggs was the right thing to do.
