Chapter 25 Enlight Media
Chapter 25 Enlight Media
Guangguang Media originally started out as a TV program producer.
Ordinary people may not know much about this company, but they must have seen the programs it has produced - "China Entertainment Report", known as the "News Broadcast" in the entertainment industry.
At its peak, it was broadcast on more than 6 television channels, covering all regions of the country and million viewers. It was one of the most well-known entertainment programs in the country and ranked first in the ratings of programs in the same period in most regions.
The rest of the programs, such as "Entertainment Live", "China People Weekly" and "China Music Chart", are also well-known programs.
Guangguang has always focused on television entertainment programs, but has also ventured into film distribution.
Just this year, they established a wholly-owned subsidiary, Enlight Pictures, and officially entered the film market. Mr. Fu knew Manager Dong from the distribution department of Enlight Pictures.
Enlight Pictures had just been established and its foundation in the film industry was still weak, and this was the time when it needed performance the most.
So when he learned that it was just the work of a sophomore student and the director was a newcomer, Manager Dong was still prepared to meet him, not to mention the face of the Beijing Film Academy.
Although the company has made it clear that its recent strategy is to focus on distributing Hong Kong and Taiwan films, this is not a conflict.
Mosquito legs are also meat.
"Let's watch the movie first."
We do have to give face to Beijing Film Academy, but the quality of the film is more important.
Manager Dong has made up his mind that if the quality of the film is too bad, even the face of Beijing Film Academy will not matter. Nothing can affect his KPI.
Entering the small screening room, the lights dimmed. Manager Dong and several young employees from the distribution department looked at the Star Entertainment logo at the beginning of the movie. It was a bit crude and it was obvious that it was a new company.
Several people didn't take it seriously. They didn't know how many movies from new companies like this they would watch in a month, and most of them were rejected.
I heard that this is a horror film, and some people have been speculating whether there will be some erotic scenes. It is a must-have for domestic horror films, such as scenes of women taking a bath, and close-ups of breasts and underwear.
At the beginning of the film, the minds of several people were gradually attracted by the plot, and they unknowingly forgot those messy thoughts.
Gradually, they put away their contempt and their expressions became serious.
As employees of the distribution department, each of them has watched countless films and it is impossible for them to be as fully engaged as ordinary audiences.
But it is precisely because they have watched countless movies that they know what a good movie is. They don't need to watch all of them, just look at the story rhythm and style to determine whether the movie is good or not.
Several people were very sure that this was a type of film that had never appeared in the country before, and it was shot quite well.
The film has a tense rhythm and a clear theme, and it is not just a plasma film. It contains things that make people think deeply.
The film is 83 minutes long. When the lights came back on, Manager Dong's heart was not as calm as he showed on his face.
Found a treasure.
"Director Zhang, Professor Fu, the quality of this film, Dark Invasion, is quite good. I find it hard to imagine that it is the work of a new director."
"Manager Dong, thank you for your praise."
"Let's talk in the office."
Manager Dong led the two to his office and waited for his subordinates to serve tea before he spoke: "We at Enlight Pictures have taken over the distribution of the film."
Manager Dong couldn't wait to finalize the deal. Currently, there was no director in the Guangguang Distribution Department, only two managers, and the competition between them was fierce.
Whoever releases a movie that stands out first will leave a deep impression in President Wang's heart, and may even be promoted directly.
"Did you bring all the information?"
"Yes, this is the filming permit, the expense list, the rental and wear and tear of the equipment, and the salaries of the actors and crew."
"You haven't applied for the Dragon Mark yet?" "I've submitted the materials, and we're still going through the process." This time it was Teacher Fu who answered, as he was the one who helped submit it for review.
Manager Dong nodded. Seeing the expressions of the two people, he hurriedly greeted them: "Don't be nervous. I'm just asking. Everyone has seen the film. There is nothing illegal. The dragon mark should be fine. Have some tea, have some tea..."
Seeing the two of them holding up their teacups, he spoke again: "By the way, what do you think about the release date?"
Determining the release date is a very important node in the distribution process. Only after the release date is determined can the corresponding publicity work be arranged, otherwise it is easy to waste resources.
"What suggestions does Manager Dong have?"
"There are Hollywood blockbusters in April, May and June, "House of Flying Daggers" in July, and one each in August and September. There are no eye-catching movies in October, so I think October is a good month."
Manager Dong said as he showed the two the screening schedule.
At this stage, Hollywood movies have absolute dominance, as do Zhang Yimou's movies. Manager Dong obviously wants to avoid these giants, which is also a very normal distribution idea.
But Zhang Chen didn't want to. It was only March now, and if he had to wait half a year for the October release, he felt it was too long.
"Manager Dong, the second half of the year is too far away. I want to release it in the first half of the year. How about May Day?"
Zhang Chen had already made a plan. Now it is 04, and there are seven days off for May Day, which should be of great help to the growth of box office.
Hearing that Zhang Chen wanted to release it on May Day, Manager Dong frowned and said, "May Day is a good time. The Day After Tomorrow will be released at the end of May, which will not have much impact on us. But there is also a Hollywood blockbuster, SWAT, in April. If you choose to release it on May Day, it will directly compete with it..."
"I don't think it's a big problem. That movie is released on the 23rd. When we release it, it's already been released for a week. We should be able to compete with it."
Zhang Chen insisted, and Manager Dong looked at the movies released in May and June. It seemed that "Warcraft" was indeed the weakest, so he agreed.
"Also, I would like to know, if your company takes over the distribution work, how will it promote it?"
Manager Dong knew that the other party was testing him and found it a little funny because the status of both parties were not equal at all.
But he is talented to be able to make such a movie at such a young age. Talented people usually do things in an unconventional way, and Manager Dong doesn't mind it, not to mention that he is really optimistic about this movie.
"Your film has a completely new cast, so it's unlikely to be promoted on TV shows. Of course, we will increase investment in soft copy and hard advertising. In addition, young people should be very interested in this type of film, so I suggest that we hold a few previews at several major universities to boost word of mouth. The response should be good."
Zhang Chen nodded. He was basically satisfied with what Manager Dong said.
"Manager Dong, I have another idea. You can consider it."
"Oh, tell me about it." Manager Dong also wanted to know what this sophomore student could teach him.
"Your company's China Entertainment Report is a flagship program. If you can mention it on this program before the release of the film, it will definitely have a significant effect on the box office growth of Darkness."
"Well, thank you Director Zhang for your suggestion. We will consider it carefully."
Manager Dong was moved when he heard the method proposed by Zhang Chen. It was indeed a good method, but it was also difficult.
Within Light Media, the film business and the television business are two different divisions. If he spoke directly, others might not give him the face he deserved.
"China Entertainment Report" is the flagship program of Guangguang Media, and it is not something they can add content to just because they want to.
If you want to get this done, you can only find President Wang Changtian.
But it takes courage to get the approval of the higher authorities. If the movie is successful, he will have accomplished a great feat. But if it fails, it will be like giving his opponents a handle to attack him.
Manager Dong was a little hesitant and didn't know how to make a decision.
