Chapter 35: Porcupine Hunt
Chapter 35: Porcupine Hunt
"What are you waiting for."
Upon hearing this, Ivan stopped practicing and prepared to get other equipment.
Biman said, "Don't worry. My father told me not to act rashly. Only a small number of porcupines appeared this time. We should not disturb them."
Lede personally led the team to check it out, and the others only had to be prepared and wait. In the end, the mercenaries did not take action to avoid alerting the enemy.
The appearance of porcupines means that they lack food and will definitely come to the black pine forest again recently.
In order to deal with the upcoming fierce battle, the Black Pine Forest Leader made proper preparations and also prepared hunting traps.
The next day, it was just beginning to get light but not yet dawn.
A group of black creatures emerged from the black pine forest and headed straight for the fertile fields in the territory.
"Where have you been?"
"It went to the south, just as the captain expected."
When someone noticed the noise, they immediately notified all the mercenaries and guards, and a group of people quickly ran towards a warehouse in the south.
In order to catch the porcupines that were causing trouble, Baron Church rarely showed his magnanimous side and took out some fragrant wheat and put it in a warehouse near the fertile fields.
This fragrant wheat is a specialty of the principality. It can only be grown in the Grand Duke's territory and is only sold to nobles.
As the name suggests, fragrant wheat has a more sweet fragrance than other wheats. It is said to be able to calm the mind and is conducive to spiritual practice. Even nobles are reluctant to eat it every day. But now it is used as bait to lure wild beasts.
In order to set up this trap, the mercenaries specially reinforced the warehouse and made special modifications inside.
When Ivan and the others arrived, the wild boar was still rooting in the fields for food, so they could ambush the wild boar in other houses nearby and wait for it to fall into the trap. If the trap failed, they would have to surround and kill it by force.
Accompanied by grunting sounds, several larger porcupines appeared first, sniffing something.
'Is this a porcupine?'
Through a gap, Ivan saw the porcupine that embarrassed the Black Pine Forest Leader. The porcupine not far away was completely different from the "big rat" in his memory. What was in front of him was a row of thorn chariots.
The whole body is the size of a yellow cow, with acupuncture needles scattered all over the body. There are shorter acupuncture needles on the head and back. The acupuncture needles on the head are obviously more special. It is said that they can become soft or hard. The tail has long acupuncture needles like feathers.
With two pairs of short legs, it looks like a small chariot full of steel needles when walking.
Ivan couldn't help but tighten the shield in his hand.
The sense of smell of pigs is actually not worse than that of dogs, and is even two or three times that of the latter. Therefore, when Baron Church proposed to add additives to the fragrant wheat, he was directly rejected by List. In fact, the guards had used it before, and the porcupines were not fooled at all.
The porcupine that was exploring the way sniffed for a while before grunting and sending a message to the back.
A large group of porcupines appeared, at least fifty or sixty of them. No wonder the Black Pine Forest Territory was so badly harmed by them.
"Boom."
When they arrived at the door of the warehouse, the leading porcupine knocked against the thick wooden door lightly, causing it to make a dull sound. Then seven or eight porcupines knocked against it together, and with two knocks, the door was opened with a gap that was just enough for a porcupine to pass through.
The porcupine charged again, but only pushed it a little further away, and it seemed that there was something more solid behind it that was holding it back.
"Hmm hum hum."
After wandering for a while, a larger porcupine slipped in through the gap in the gate, followed by two or three more. The other porcupines were able to resist their desire for food and stayed outside the granary.
Ivan witnessed this scene and thought to himself that these porcupines were cunning.
However, they encountered more experienced mercenaries, and the bait was real.
Reed tried to persuade Baron Church many times, and Ivan occasionally gave Lisa a hint or two about the dangers. Combined with the previous experience in the Black Mist Forest and the situation of the guard captain Marshall, Baron Church finally agreed to spend a huge amount of money, and the group of wild beasts had no choice but to be fooled.
After a while, a signal came from inside, and the other porcupines crowded through the gate and entered the warehouse all at once.
Two figures trotted over with light steps, closed the door from the outside, tied two iron chains, and wrapped them around and around. "Okay, everything is ready, it's time to eliminate the beasts."
The beast fell into the trap. Liede turned a deaf ear to the collision sounds coming from inside, called out the people who were ambushing nearby, and arranged the next killing plan. The group of people would be divided into three teams.
"Ivan, look at this. You have to be careful later." Biman pulled Ivan and pointed to the big door behind him. A needle penetrated the thick wooden door directly, leaving a small part exposed.
Ivan secretly clicked his tongue. The power of this weapon was no less than that of an arrow. He must not be careless.
Fortunately, there were only a few needles that could pierce through the wooden door, which means that not all attacks have such power.
This time, he and Biman followed Deputy Captain Gro. After the team of six arrived at the warehouse, they leaned a wooden ladder against the wall, climbed up the ladder, entered through the small window, and landed on the wooden corridor built a few days ago.
A few days ago, in order to kill the wild beasts at the lowest cost, the mercenaries specially built a suspended wooden corridor in the warehouse, which was more than four meters above the ground. It was installed on three sides except the side with the gate.
The wooden boards under the wooden corridor are particularly thick, and there are several double-layer door panels in front.
"Boom!"
The porcupine realized that it had been tricked. When it saw someone appear above it, its porcupine needles flew out like flowers from the sky, making people's scalps tingle.
The double-layer door panels are today's shields, with fine stitches hitting them like raindrops, adding a layer of black and white decoration to the door panels.
"Let them run wild for a while."
Several people landed on the wooden corridor one by one. Gro reminded his subordinates not to move rashly. He also had the leisure to point out: "These needles are good materials for making crossbows. They only need a little modification. The baron promised to give us 30%."
Biman couldn't help but complain: "Less than half, stingy."
In theory, the spoils belong to those who participate in the battle. At least the mercenary group can get half of it. Most nobles are too embarrassed to fight for petty profits, so usually such spoils will belong to the mercenary group.
These words made the two guards in the team feel a little embarrassed, but they didn't know what to say because Lord Hei Songlin's finances had always been tight.
"It's our turn."
After a while, the porcupine stopped its arrogant behavior, and Gro signaled everyone to disperse in pairs.
Ivan followed Gro.
The two men were behind a double-layer door panel, one on the left and one on the right, and they leaned forward, drew their bows and shot arrows.
The warehouse was filled with the sound of dense whizzing arrows, the screams of porcupines, the sound of porcupine needles hitting wooden boards, and occasionally the painful cries of unlucky guys.
The hunters stood in the early morning sun, looking down from above, but they were unable to break out of this carefully arranged warehouse until the last porcupine was shot and fell to the ground.
"Is anyone injured?"
"Danny."
"Buck."
The battle came to an end. Lede shouted a question, but when he heard that it was not his man, he stopped talking.
The mission was over, and the mercenaries received their reward, a heavy shield that was nearly two meters high. The Baron said it could even defend against the Grand Knight's fighting spirit slash. The downside was that it was heavy. One mercenary could lift it but could not use it in combat, and it required two people to move it properly.
This shield may come in handy, not to mention it can serve as the symbol of the Giant Shield Mercenaries.
The next morning, the Giant Shield Mercenaries packed up everything, said goodbye to Baron Church and set off on their journey home.
On horseback, Beeman quipped, “You really don’t want to say something to her?”
Ivan glanced at him and said, "That's right. I have to talk to Padge when I get back. What do you think of the story of the young Beaman who bravely fought a sea monster to save a drowning man?"
Not far away, Miss Church was looking at Ivan with her eyes full of affection, which made people unable to look directly at her. Unfortunately, that person disappeared at the end of the road without looking back, leaving the beautiful woman with a face full of grievance.
